From Colleen Graham, your Guide to Cocktails

Today is National Gin Day, or at least one of them. It seems that November 5 and June 15 have both taken on this designation, though it seems that the summer date may actually be World Gin Day. Who knows! Nonetheless, let's use this as an excuse to have a great gin cocktail or two, and I have filled this edition with little else.

In other news, the November cocktail contest is up and running and this month I'm looking for your holiday cocktails. What that means to you is open to your interpretation, there's more on that below. Cheers!

Cocktail of the Week: Watson
Watson Cocktail

The Watson is the newest recipe in my collection and it is a great one that comes from Upstairs at the Kimberly in NYC. A mix of gin, cucumber, white cranberry, and Pimm's No. 1, it is one of the best new gin cocktails I've had in some time.

Dolomint

Dolomint CocktailI love this simple gin cocktail because it adds a little depth to the popular Gin Buck. All you need is your favorite gin, some lime juice and ginger ale, a touch of Galliano for spice and a sprig of fresh mint.

The Martini
Gin Martini

We could not celebrate a day devoted to gin without the classic Gin Martini, which can be made in so many ways. Maybe you like yours in the 3:1 gin to vermouth or prefer just a hint of the fortified wine. Maybe your Martini uses one of the artisanal gins instead of a London dry gin, or you like to get adventurous with your olives by opting for jalapeno or blue cheese stuffing over pimento. However you take your Martini, today is a great day to enjoy one, or it's at least an excuse.

November Cocktail Contest: Holiday Cocktails
Candy Cane Cocktail

What ingredients make you think of the holidays? Do you have a special cocktail your family relies on for Christmas dinner? Are you mixing up something special for the office party? These are the drinks I'm looking for this month. The cocktail contest theme is very open ended, quite simply 'holiday cocktails' with no requirements other than it evoke your special meaning of the end of the year holidays. You can even be a Grinch and share a recipe that suits that mood.

The deadline on this contest is November 25th and the results will be announced at the height of the holiday season in December. Share your holiday drink here...
