From Colleen Graham, your Guide to Cocktails

Is it just me or did summer fly by? Well, here we are in September and that means there are two important items to discuss: the new cocktail contest and bourbon. The theme for this month's contest is a very seasonal one and I hope you will have fun with it. Details are below.

Also, September is National Bourbon Heritage Month and we are going to start it off right with many bourbon articles and drinks to fill the rest of this week's edition. If you're looking for a little adventure this month, you might want to hit the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, right in the heart of bourbon country. That runs September 17-22 and here is the website for more details.

Cocktail of the Week: Big Apple Manhattan

We're combining the two topics of this edition for this fun and delicious cocktail. It begins with Wild Turkey Bourbon and adds amaretto, apple pucker, and cranberry juice. It is simple and has a fruity candy flavor with a robust bourbon background. Get the recipe...

September Cocktail Contest: Apple Cocktails
It is apple season and that is the theme for this month's cocktail contest. I'm looking for your original drink recipes that use any apple ingredient. Fresh apples, syrup, cider, juice, spirits, it is all up for grabs, just include one apple flavoring and send in your recipe. Deadline for this one is September 22... Submit today

Bourbon Old-fashioned
Few drinks display the beauty of a great bourbon better than the Old-fashioned and it is simpler than it is often made out to be. All you need is a muddler, some sugar, bitters, an orange, and a cherry. Add the bourbon and you have one of the best cocktails you will ever drink and one of the best parts is that it is a different experience with every bourbon... The recipe

Bourbon History Timeline
If there is one thing that I love about bourbon, it is the stories. Many of the Kentucky distillers have roots that go back generations to before bourbon was bourbon. It is a long history filled with interesting characters and if you ever get the chance to talk to someone in a bourbon family, listen closely because they will tell you some of the best tales you've heard...
