About

From Hilary Pollack, your About Food Editor

Crisp or chewy? That's our primary debacle this week, as we happily survey all of the scrumptious ways to enjoy holiday cookies. You can't go wrong with classic sugar, but there is certainly something to be said for soft frosted pumpkin cookies and jam thumbprints. Better yet, make a cookie spread, set up a sugar cookie decorating station, arrange a cookie exchange with friends, and enjoy all of the above (and all of the below), truly bringing new meaning to "sugar, spice, and everything nice." Sugar, Sugar
Sugar cookies are one of our favorite things about the holiday season; not only do they taste great, but the process of cutting and decorating them is even better. Even kids will be able to make our Easy Sugar Cookie recipe, though there are lots of variations based on family traditions. Scroll down for frosting recipes, too; make several kinds, add a few drops of food coloring to each, and let the masterpieces manifest.

Twice the Spice
Clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon, even a whiff of you makes us sigh with coziness and holiday cheer. Spice cookies are an easy way of enjoying these classic seasonal flavors, and make great gifts, too! Start with classic gingerbread or Belgian speculaas--the latter is known for being the base of "cookie butter".

Nuttier than a Fruit Cookie
Warm cookies topped with jam or studded with walnuts are the perfect way to add depth and sophistication to your cookie selection. We can't get enough of Jam-Topped Thumbprint Cookies, but Festive Fruit and Nut Wreath Cookies don't sound half bad either. Click here for a list of cookies recipes that you'll be truly nuts for!

Fab Frosting
No cookie is really complete without a generous swath of creamy frosting, is it? From super-simple icing to Classic Cream Cheese Frosting, there's a sweet spread for every cookie you can imagine. So whether it's chocolate on peanut butter cookies or buttercream on brownies, enjoy it!
