 | We are kicking off this first week of October with two topics, pears and vodka. The first is the theme for this month's cocktail recipe contest and the second is in honor of National Vodka Day, which is Friday, the 4th. To celebrate I have filled this edition with more vodka recipes than I recommend drinking in one day, but you can always stretch it through the weekend and have fun exploring the array of drinks in which vodka makes an appearance. October Cocktail Contest: Pear Cocktails
Happy October! The new month means - you guessed it - a new cocktail contest and this month we are taking on the lovely, the delightful pear. Pear vodkas, pear brandies, pear liqueurs, pear wines, pear nectars, pear purees, fresh pears; however you can get the flavor of pear into a drink, that is what I'm looking for this month. Vodka is used more than any other base liquor in cocktails and there are some fantastic mixes out there. These are a few favorites... - Basil North - If you are harvesting the basil in your garden right now, you may want to check out this vodka cocktail that mixes that fresh flavor with apple juice.
- Harrington - A simple green cocktail that is great for any occasion. This one is made of vodka, Green Chartreuse, and curacao.
- Mad Eye Martini - This has been a favorite for Halloween over the past few years because it has a fun eyeball garnish, but the drink is fantastic without it. All you need is a great vodka, Hpnotiq, and lychee juice.
- Mango Tonic - An easy adaptation of a Vodka Tonic can be had by simply adding a mango liqueur.

| Flavored Vodka Cocktails
Then, there is the growing collection of flavored vodka drinks. Whether you are using homemade infusions or selecting from the myriad of bottles on the liquor store shelf, these are some fun drinks to mix up... - Apple Crisp - Combine a cake vodka, spiced whiskey, maple syrup, and apple juice for a tasty fall treat.
- Ginger Snap Martini - Made with a pear vodka, amaretto, molasses, ginger, and the lovely spices found in ginger snaps, this seasonal cocktail is a delight.
- Ice Kaffe - Take a White Russian, add vanilla vodka alongside the clear, then drop in a fun cafe con leche ice cube and you have a fantastic drink.
- Vanilla Rose - In this one I have combined my two favorite herbs in infusions, a rosemary vodka and a lavender syrup. Add a touch of vermouth and a vanilla bean and you have a lovely little cocktail.
