From Christina Donnelly, your About Pets Editor
Finding the perfect furry (or scaly or slimy) family member is hard work! Lucky for you animal lovers, we've got tips, tricks and advice to make your search for the perfect pet fast, fun and stress-free.

Finding Your New Dog
You're getting a dog! Woof! I mean, yay! Bringing a dog into your family is a huge step ... with huge responsibilities. Not only do you have to determine which kind of dog is right for your family, but you have to consider the cost of dog ownership, the time required to properly care for your dog and what you would do if you had to give up your dog. Like I said, major decisions need to be made before buying or adopting a pooch. Oh, and let's not forget: dubbing your dog with the perfect name.

Finding Your New Cat
Cats make amazing pets! They're cute, (usually) cuddly and fairly independent. But before you adopt (or buy) a kitty, there are a few things you have to consider: Should you adopt an adult cat or a kitten?, Which breed of cat should you choose?, What if you're allergic to cats, but really, really want one?! And although cats are independent by nature, it's so incredibly important to make sure you have the time to give your cat the proper care, attention and love he needs to thrive.

Finding Your New Horse
Looking to buy a horse? Take our horse ownership readiness quiz first! How'd you score? Owning a horse is a huge responsibility—literally and figuratively. First, make sure you read all the facts on finding and purchasing a horse, completing a pre-purchase exam and how much it really costs to own a horse. And make sure you're able to dedicate plenty of time, energy and care to feeding, grooming, exercising and boarding your new horse. Giddy up!

Finding Your New Exotic Pet
Exotic, uncommon pets are incredibly diverse—from turtles to bunnies to pot-bellied pigs, oh my! Our A-to-Z guide of exotic pets can help you narrow down the new scaly, slimy or furry member of your family. But here's a major head's up: before you adopt or purchase your new exotic pet, make sure to check out the exotic pet laws in your state and find a vet that treats exotic pets; not all vets can provide proper care.
