From Colleen Graham, your Guide to Cocktails

First of all, I want to thank everyone who shared their opinions in the Readers' Choice Awards. The voting is now closed and next week I will make the official announcement as to which brands are your favorites this year.

Also this week, we have a bit of news from Tennessee and some drinks for our favorite white spirits that are perfect for the season ahead. And with that, I must apologize. Though many of my readers are in the northern hemisphere and are as excited about spring as I am, I forgot about those of you on the other side of the world where autumn is approaching. For those of you seeking fall-fresh cocktails, I recommend browsing through the Fall Cocktail Collection to find drinks and links that are more appropriate. I do hope that your colder seasons are less extreme than ours were this year.

Cheers!

Barrel Battles in Tennessee
Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey

There has been an interesting debate in the Tennessee legislature in the last few weeks that concerns the long-accepted and now legal definition of Tennessee whiskey. The Jack Daniel's backed law went into effect in 2013 and this year opponents of the strict regulations have been looking to rewrite it to make a broader definition of what can be labeled as 'Tennessee Whiskey.'

Just this week, the rewrite was tabled for a year so nothing will change in that time. However, it is an intriguing debate and one to look for next year. Get the rest of the details...

Vodka Collins

There is little room to argue that vodka is the most useful and used liquor in today's bars. It's clean profile makes it a perfect candidate for mixing with any flavor you wish and market demands have forced brands to worry more about quality, which only makes our drinks taste better. There are thousands of vodka drinks to explore and enjoy and they seem to get better every year. Browse the vodka cocktail collection...

Getting Fresh with Gin Cocktails
Brooklyn Cocktail

Though it is not quite as versatile as vodka, gin is still an essential in a bar and is surprisingly versatile in cocktails. I think that gin requires a bit of palate training to fully appreciate, particularly if you tend to have pickier tastes, and there is such a variety of profiles in today's gins that there is likely a gin and gin cocktail for everyone.
