Rap has produced some of the most meaningful and memorable lyrics in music history. They are not from these songs, a sampling of the worst lyrics the genre has to offer.

The Billboard chart rankings, at least in rock's first golden age, were well-known for their accuracy. Which means somebody must have loved these songs... but time has not been kind to these smash hits, all of which were the most popular songs in the US for at least one week of glory.

Love has long been a popular theme in rock music: finding it, wishing you could find it, losing it, never having it, wanting more of it. As we all know, just because a song reaches the top of the Billboard pop charts does not ensure that it's a great - or even a good - song. After all, the pop music market can be fickle, and top hits' general dependence on popularity automatically makes song quality an afterthought. Therefore, it's fairly easy to come up with a lengthy list of '80s No. 1 hits that are questionable if not cringe-inducing.
