From Colleen Graham, your Guide to Cocktails

Saturday finds us with another 'drink day' to contend with and in this round it is all about the vodka. Many of us are also in the midst of apple season, so it is only appropriate to mix the two occasions and, of course, I have drinks for that.

In other news, we have a new cocktail contest and details for that are below. I will have a decision in the tea contest soon and if you haven't had a chance, browse through all of the entries. It's a fantastic lot.

Cocktail of the Week: Autumn Spiced Tonic
Autumn Spiced Tonic

Give your Vodka Tonic an autumnal twist with this new recipe that I've been playing with. It all begins with a week long infusion of apple, pear, and cinnamon in your favorite vodka. Once the flavor gets to your liking, you're all set to add a little simple syrup and a great tonic water before sitting back to enjoy the fall colors. Get the recipe...

Apple Martinis of Every Sort
Apple Martini

Ahh, the Appletini. It is where vodka and apples meet and it has evolved to include a variety of recipes to explore. Some go with the popular sour apple schnapps, others opt for a softer cider, and ditch the vodka and go with whiskey, or add a little caramel flavoring. Then, there is one of my favorites, the Maca Martini, which turns everything upside down and goes with cachaca as the base. With all of these options, we better get started.  Get the recipes...

Back to Class: Vodka 101
Bottles of Vodka

Myth #1: Vodka is not tasteless or odorless (yes, people can smell it on your breath). There are subtle flavors in most vodkas if you pay attention.

It is true, however, that all vodka is not created equal and there are some definite lines between good and bad vodka. Also, vodka doesn't have to be made strictly from grain, in fact there are very few regulations on producing vodka, so distillers can (and do) test the limits of what we think of as vodka. It's a spirit category that expands almost daily and gets more interesting with each passing year. More Vodka 101...

October Cocktail Contest: Vodka
Crimson Crush

The new month brings with it a new cocktail contest, and I've decided that it is time to revisit some of the basics to see what new concoctions you have to share. October is the first of a few months where we'll focus on one of the base spirits and this month we will take on the easiest mixer of them all: Vodka. I don't care how you do it or what you mix up, I just want to see your original cocktail recipes that include vodka and, because it is an easy theme, I expect great things. Submit your recipe...
