| | | This Week in Teen Life | | Over the past few days, there has been a lot of talk about the new Nicki Minaj music video for her song, "Only." The video has been accused of using some pretty intense looking Nazi imagery. The Anti-Defamation League said in a statement that it was "deeply disturbed by the unadulterated Nazi imagery." But "Only" isn't alone in upsetting people. Here are some other videos that have been called out over the years for crossing the line from provocative to offensive. | | | | | | | Blurred Lines | | The video for Blurred Lines stirred up controversy for a few reasons. First there was the simple fact that all the women in the video were naked while the men were fully clothed. Then there were those lyrics. Thicke sings, “I know you want it,” which is a phrase that many sexual assault survivors report their rapists saying to justify their actions. Plus, it implies that women who say no to sex, secretly mean yes. That's something that a lot of anti-rape activists with take issue with. | | | | | | | | Katy Perry Dark Horse | | Katy Perry's music video for "Dark Horse" offended many people in the Muslim community due to the deception of a threatening Katy Perry setting a potential suitor wearing an Allah pendant on fire. And, as About's Top 40 expert said of the song, "Unfortunately, the inclusion of Juicy J's featured rap pulls the entire production down. His reference to Jeffrey Dahmer feels unnecessarily tasteless." | | | | | | | | Eminiem's Rap God | | About's Rap and Hip Hop expert says that Eminem's seventh album (on which the song "Rap God" appears) "Doesn't veer too far from his usual themes: mayhem, jokes, vocal tics, introspection, all around weirdness all make cameos on this concept album...Eminem has grown more self-aware, more self-analytical, more self-introspective. But he hasn't grown up." This was clear to a lot of people after listening to the song, which includes homophobic slurs. | | | | | | | | The Prodigy's Smack my B**ch Up | | With a title like this, it isn't surprising that the accompanying video is pretty upsetting. This song's video features drug abuse, drunk driving, a hit and run, brawls and abuse of women, something that is then...blamed on a woman. | | | | | | | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About Teen Life newsletter.
